Charlie Chikankata has a lot to answer for! Here I am in the heart of rural Zambia, working for The Salvation Army as the Manager/Hospital Administrator of Chikankata Health Services. Not so much an intellectuall reflection rather a kind of journal of the unexpected.

Today I have been to Nameembo. Chikankata Health Servics has started a campaign to scale up its Anti- Retroviral Treatment (ART) for people in its catchment. For the last three weeks we have sent out a team to a different area of our catchment area to undertake voluntary counselling and testing. Last night they held a workshop and over 200 people attended including 4 village headmen. When I visited this morning over 30 people had been for VCT.
Nameembo is a 30 minute drive from Chikankata along dirt tracks. It's one of the biggest areas in our catchment area and because of its proximity to the farm and their migrant workers it has a really bad HIV/AIDS problem. Despite Zambia clearly declaring itself as a Christian country and a good 80% of people attending church, it still has one of the most serious HIV/AIDS problems in the world. There is a real issue in Chikankata of Culture vs. Christianity!
By the way, I drove to Nameembo by motorbike; this being my first real solo trip into the community. I am feeling a little bit pleased with myself.
