Charlie Chikankata has a lot to answer for! Here I am in the heart of rural Zambia, working for The Salvation Army as the Manager/Hospital Administrator of Chikankata Health Services. Not so much an intellectuall reflection rather a kind of journal of the unexpected.

I walked into the Blockyard today and felt a sense of pride as I looked at the vehicles. When I arrived Heidie referred to this area as the 'Graveyard'. Our shiny Landcruisers, new Truck and one or two other vehicles now back in working order looking good, means that transport is now less of a problem. The old faithful 4139 was taken to Lusaka to be sold off in Auction.
Man, transport has been hard work over the last few months. My favourite moment was when driving one Chikankata vehicle, the whole wheel came off - meaning I was driving on the axle. The wheel was bouncing about 20 foot in the air one way whilst I was travelling the other. To make matters worse, this wee man on his bike nearly got clobbered by this bouncing bomb.
Already I have got stuck in the mud three times and had to be pulled out. Once in Malala, once on the way to Ngangula and most recently drive round the National park in Livingstone, just 500 yards away from a herd (?) of buffallo. Thankfully, a Danish couple arrived in the nick of time and pulled us out with an electric winch. I don't know who was more excited me and my three passengers for being moved to safety or the Danish man from Kitwe who was using his winch for the first time.
